Curves soften life. Straight lines are the easy way outr like those kitchen cabinets that arrive in cardboard boxes; they're the visual equivalent of a dial tone.
Curves add interest at the ends of this kitchen cabinet riser and in the sweep of the counter (right). And the complex curves built into the bottom of the wall cabinet (below) give life to that design. It was hours on the floor of our shop with my pencil and a shrinking eraser before I was satisfied with the design of those curves.
A gentle curve. The shape of the outside edge of this kitchen counter gives your eyes a break from the horizontal and vertical lines that encompass most of the cabinets. Note the curves on the counter end and on the ends of the cabinet riser.
