Wood dough, wood filler and water putty are best used in areas that aren't visible, or in furniture which is to be painted. Stick shellac or lacquer is best on furniture which is lacquered, shellacked or varnished, and where the repair is in a visible spot. Wood dough is best for deep holes (screw holes, for example), while wood filler is best for shallow dents. Both can be used to fill cracks. Whatever filler you employ, use a color that is close to the furniture finish to start with. Don't depend on later coloring to match the finish.
