Longitudinal Crack

Another kind of break that often occurs in self-doweled rungs is the longitudinal crack. In these breaks, a long crack develops along the length of the rung, usually continuing on into the doweled portion. More often than not. the crack is so severe that the rung comes out in two pieces. Repair, fortunately, is easy. Just glue the rung together again, exactly as it was before. If you clamp it properly during gluing, you will have a sound repair. If splinters of wood are missing, fill the gaps with wood putty. Refinish the rung to match the rest of the chair.
