The professionals who hand strip furniture do the job with the same chemicals and tools that you would use. The difference is that they perform the labor and you pay the money. Hand Stripping is more expensive than tank stripping, but more restorers think the additional expense of hand stripping is a good investment. There is less opportunity for serious damage to the furniture, and the wood is left a brighter color, so is easier to refinish in a light tone.
Our opinion is this: hand stripping is the best for most furniture. Do it yourself or have it done for you. We think the finish you get after a hand stripping job is significantly better than the one achieved after tank stripping. In addition, the furniture piece will suffer less.
