To do the best job of varnishing, you must be able to see how the coats arc going down and to see any dust that has settled on the surface. The best way to make this possible is to place a table lamp with its shade removed just beyond one end of the work. Then, when you look down into the work from a position opposite the lamp, you can see every imperfection because of the reflection of the lighfon the new surface. (This lamp trick is good when enameling or applying other finishes, too. It enables you to see when one area is not covered as well as the rest.)
