One of the most important workshop items, and one that it would be very difficult to manage without, is a firm working surface, preferably fitted with a vice. This can be a bench that is a permanent fixture, or one of the portable 'workmate' types.


Whenever possible, I prefer to use hand tools because they are quieter, produce less dust and are probably safer. However, some jobs are definitely made easier and quicker with power tools and, in order to avoid unnecessary drudgery, a few power tools are very useful.

continuous loop. The two-wheel types tend to be more expensive and more versatile than those with three wheels, which are usually used for smaller, less demanding jobs. The bands come in a variety of widths and teeth configurations, but in general, straight cuts require a wide blade and curved cuts a narrow one.

Although all power saws are dangerous if not used properly band saws are safer than bench-mounted circular saws. However, they are not as accurate, particularly when using a fence.
