Computer desk

DECREE OF DIFFICULTY: medium

TIME TO MAKE: 50 hours

It has been estimated that within the next few years 50% of homes and nearly all small businesses will have at least one computer. This desk has been designed so that it is ideal for computer use as well as for writing letters, doing homework and household accounts, and many other aspects of home office use.

When planning a desk, the height from the floor and the height of the desk top in relationship to the height of the seat must be considered for the comfort of the user, particularly if it will be used for several hours at a time. If you have to reach upwards to the keyboard or bend your neck back to look at the monitor because the desk top is too high, you will find it tiring. If the desk is too low, you will have to stoop, which is bad for your back and could lead to injury.

In an office environment, the chairs and sometimes the desks are adjustable which alleviates most of the problems, but

for home use this is often not possible. The simple solution is to tailor the height of the desk top to the individual who will use it. The dimensions of this desk have been designed for an 'average-sized' user - between 67 and 71in (1.7 and i.8m). For slightly taller people, the length of the uprights in the supports can be increased, while for shorter people it can be reduced.

To keep it as simple as possible, the construction makes extensive use of screws and simple joints in areas where they are not important for the visual aspects of the design. This also helps to reduce the amount of time needed to make the project.
