Chair

DECREE OF DIFFICULTY: medium TIME TO MAKE: 35 hours

This chair was made after I had completed the desk from the previous chapter, as it was apparent that a matching chair would be a worthwhile project.

Because of the difficulty of making a chair that can be adjusted to suit different people, it was tailor-made for my size (average height). To determine the various dimensions, sit at the desk on a dining-room chair and work for half an hour. If after that time no discomfort is felt, such as the seat cutting into the legs, the height is probably correct. If there is some discomfort, try sitting on a pad of some kind to raise the height, or alternatively find a slightly lower chair. When a comfortable position is found, measure the various dimensions and use these to make the chair.

For an average-sized person, the dimensions I have used should be satisfactory. I designed the chair to have arms to give the elbow support while using the computer mouse, which alleviates the ache in the shoulder that can occur if it is used for long periods. At the height specified, the chair will push under the desk when not in use.
