The corners and edges of the rough-cut boards make effective scrapers that remove the dirt from your shoes. The dirt falls between the boards where it remains out of sight until you pick up the mat and sweep it away. To clean the mat. just hose it off.
This project has other uses besides wiping your feet. I .ay it under an outdoor spigot or fountain to prevent the ground from getting muddy. Make a rustic walkway by setting several mats end-to-end. You can even make a patio by arranging a number of mats on a level bed of sand and gravel.
