Gluing the legs to the side rails

Test-assemble the legs and side rails, fine-tuning any ill-fitting joints with a chisel, if necessary. Sand any surfaces that will be difficult to access once the table is assembled. Next, spread glue on the contacting surfaces between one of the side rails and its corresponding legs, then fit the joints together, tapping them into final position with a wooden mallet, if required. Use two bar clamps to secure the joints. Aligning the bars with the side rail, lay the assembly on its side on a work surface with one clamp under the rail and one on top. Prop the tapered portion of the legs on wood blocks to keep the assembly level. Protecting the stock with wood pads, tighten the clamps evenly until a thin glue bead squeezes out of the joints (right). Repeat for the remaining side rail and legs.

Leveling block

Once the glue bonding the legs to the side rails has cured, remove the clamps and set the assemblies flat on a work surface with their mortises facing up. Test-fit and, if necessary, correct any ill-fitting joints and do any required sanding. Spread glue on the contacting surfaces between the end and drawer rails and the legs, then fit the bottom drawer rail and end rail into one of the side rail assemblies (above). Position the other leg-and-rail assembly on top and set the framework upright on the floor. Finally, fit the top drawer rail into place and clamp the assembly (step 6).
